It is the Rhine grape variety par excellence! Everyone agrees that the Rhine Valley is its cradle. For some, it would be the Argitis minor of the Romans and its culture dates back to the Roman occupation. According to Stoltz, Riesling was introduced in the 9th century in the vineyards of Rheinghau.

Taste it
It plays in the register of white spring flowers, acacia, honeysuckle; fruits such as white peach; citrus fruits such as grapefruit, lime; combinations such as the smell of young Douglas fir shoots, a conifer blending expressions of mandarin zest and beeswax; expressions of the specific mineralities of the terroir, the signature of great Rieslings.
All this is supported by a beautiful acidity which makes it one of the greatest white wines in the world.
Pair it
Drink chilled, but not iced, with shellfish and other seafood. Also with white meats, au gratin dishes and starters.
Its origins
In 1843, the day after the division of Charlemagne's empire, Louis II le Germain had the Gentile Aromatique planted along the Rhine. This grape variety soon took the name of riesling, a name which comes from riesen (to flow in German) because before it became acclimatized to Alsace, it was susceptible to coulure (during unfavorable climatic conditions, such as rains in the moment of flowering, the flower falls to the ground, so there is no production of grapes).
